about imelda frequently asked questions

how would you describe your music?
i have no idea- why don't you tell me? (just please don't say folk.)

what is your musical background/training?
with the exception of being a vocal major in high school, i never had formal training. i remember always knowing how to play piano- even if it was just "chopsticks." i had tons of free time as a kid so i would always try to figure out a song i liked from a tape. for two months though a really nice woman, who i call tita paz taught me how to play "yellow bird," "blue berry hill," and "love story." i told her i wanted to learn how to read music. we never did get that far. a couple weeks later, my sister went to the same woman for guitar lessons. i tagged along. tita paz tried to teach her "my darling clementine." i was hooked. that was the only time i had a guitar lesson. after that, i depended on my ear to figure out songs.

who are your influences?
it's not so much the person or the band i consider an influence. for me, the song makes a deeper impression. however, the first album to change the way i thought about songwriting was tori amos' "under the pink."

what recording equipment do you use?
i use a yamaha 4-track, a shure microphone, and endless cables.

describe your songwriting process.
it varies, sometimes i'll hear an interesting phrase and try to make something around it. other times i'm just messing around with my piano/guitar and will hear a chord progression i like. either way, i've mostly work on the words and music simultaneously.

who is maggie?
my first and present manager and the one who helps me get this all together.
